About

ShannonElaine S. John, MA, LPC, LAC

Along your journey, you may find boulders and pebbles, experience hurricanes and sunny days. I can be there beside you as a supporter, as a witness and to guide you through the most difficult of passageways. We can walk the valleys and summits together, navigating growth, pain and unforeseen tornadoes. I know what it is like to see deep pits, to stand on the edge staring down into the abyss. I have been on the shore of vast oceans unsure of how to cross safely. I have witnessed journeys that were jagged, raw, heavy and dark and have been on others that were vast quests of exploration.

I personally have walked on many journeys, both as an explorer and as a guide… Epic life changing voyages through anxiety, depression, grief, terminal illness, trauma and violence. Expeditions through identity exploration, alternative relationships, major life changes, immigration and addiction.
Many people often find themselves lost, walking in circles without a map or compass. With twelve years of mental health experience, I have guided hundreds of people along. You alone define your journey, I invite you to allow me and my experience along as your travel companion.

Services:

I am able to offer integrated services which means I am open to working with other professionals also assisting you on your journey. We all work together to see you through to wellness and to your best self. I offer weekend appointments, in person and tele-health appointments. I work with adolescents up through end of life and I see individuals, couples, families and groups. Services are provided in Spanish or English.

Experience:

I have been working in private practice for 3 years and in mental health since 2009. Over the years, I have worked with addictions, with domestic violence survivors, with individuals who have immigration concerns, with the severely mentally ill in institutions (correctional and mental health), and in outpatient mental health agencies and in integrated family medicine. I have provided presentations and trainings on inclusivity of people of color, LGBTQIAP* and ethical non-monogamy as well as, presented on ethical communication within organizations.

My previous position was a full time as a Behavioral Health Provider in a family medical clinic as a generalist. In this role I collaborated with medical providers as part of a treatment team focusing on whole body health. This role has afforded me additional experience and hands on training in screening, assessment, diagnosing and understanding of pharmacology and correlations between physical/chronic illness and mental illness.
Most importantly, it has shaped my views on mental health which is simply another word for health. Our body and mind work together, and everyone is on a spectrum of health whether the symptoms manifest physically, emotionally or both. We all have had or will have some mental health concerns at least once in our lifetime. I believe this knowledge and awareness bridges us and reduces some of the societal imposed stigma.

Education:

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Ethic studies from the University of Colorado Denver and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Psychology from Regis University. I have additional training in addictions, trauma and DBT. I am certified in EMDR.  My clinical orientation is primarily person centered with some cognitive behavioral, solution focused, gestalt and existentialism woven in.

Personal:

Journeys are my life and when I am not helping others along theirs you can find me traveling all over forging expeditions of my own. I enjoy experiencing different cultures, learning different languages and soaking up all the world has to offer. When I am home, in warmer weather I spend time outdoors, lakes, mountains, parks and when it is colder I immerse myself in books and learning.
